They were a group from East Asia, in California to study with a personal empowerment guru – ”she’s an amazing woman,” Michelle from Singapore told me. They were hanging out at Safeway, affixing notes titled ”Love is Forever” to individual roses. They sang joyously and stuck pink animal stickers on each other’s faces at the round table by the deli, in front of the Netflix DVD rental machine. The text inside of the note read ”Today is the best day of your life!” in both English and Cantonese. I felt like I had found kindred spirits: I took my picture with them and we chatted excitedly.
A favourite song lyric goes ”Do something pretty while you can, don’t fall asleep, skating a pirouette on ice is cool. Do something pretty while you can, don’t be a fool, reading the Gospel to yourself is fine”. I think about that often when I hand out my photos. Some people comb through the stack carefully while others pick one at random. Either way, it always seems as if the person is directed to the right photo. I like it best when the universe creates appropriate combinations.
It seems that all this technological and economical upheaval has left behind a generation of confused, scared, and lonely people who have traded the poetry of existence for a hygienic and efficient comfort. Sometimes I think doing something pretty is the only way to get out of the Waiting Place.
Out there things can happen and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you.
And when things start to happen, don’t worry. Don’t stew. Just go right along. You’ll start happening too.
Oh! The Places You’ll Go!
